To In Year 5 we have been looking at how lighthouse keepers live and the jobs they would have to do in the lighthouse. We learnt about their main jobs and how it would have felt to have been there for 2 weeks. We found out that they had certain jobs to do every day and some jobs they would have to do when it was needed, for example... - Maintain the light. - Paint the outside of the lighthouse. - Stay in the lamp room all night if it was stormy. - Trim the wicks every morning. - Polish the reflectors. - Keep the oil viscous. (Liquid) - Fill in the log book every day - Quickly replace damaged windows from the spare set. (Rarely) - Check the lamp every 2 hours. - Clean the windows with a Linen cloth. - Make sure they didn't stand in front of the light. - Light the lamp half an hour after sunset, put it out half an before sunrise. - Make sure they used only their daily allowance of oil.
